In this video my friend Mt-Yidaki dhapirrk-yidaki.com/ is playing a traditional Yidaki made by Djalu Gurruwiwi in the key of F(I want to thank Jeremy Cloake and Colin from aboriginalarts.co.uk/ for the opportunity of having a workshop with this yidaki master) and a didgeridoo I made from agave in the key of C.This was supposed to help people understand a little better the difference between Yidaki and Didgeridoo, normally you can feel some of those differences in the definition, roughness and clearness of the sound and some Yidaki seem not to be so suitable for contemporary playing and vice-versa. Please be aware that this is a personal opinion. The problem is that I chose two completely different instruments to compare, so the result is that you can listen to cool rythms by Mt-yidaki played in two different instruments - have fun!Michiel is playing his own style that is inspired by traditional playing, he is not playing traditional style. This video was made with all the respect for the Yolngu People of Arnhem Land that gave us this wonderfull instrument. If you want to buy great yidaki visit dhapirrk-yidaki.com/

I Think the comparison every one is trying to make is which is the better stick. I bet Laga would make the agave sound pretty good. The example im trying ti illustrate is a good player can make a bad stick sound great and vice versa.

Hey, thank you for your comment. This was, indeed, an inbalanced example but I don't agree that it had to with the professional concert agave or not. I must say that I have done dozens of agave didges and they are considered by some people some of the best didgeridoos made in Portugal and quite a few internationally known players like them. This particular agave I use on concert with my band and it has a really impressive sound, even compared with Yidaki and other professional instruments. ;-)

This video is all well and good, but for comparison sake it seems an imbalanced example. On the one hand you have a trad stick made by a master (Djalu) and on the other, a self-made agave. Gotta grab a profesional concert agave for "balance" next time, me thinks. Nice vid though. -Brad

Yes,this is a great comparison video,in terms of certain qualities of traditional Yidaki versus a more western oriented didjeridu. Yidaki is not for everyone, the pure traditional style is dependent on the players ability, and typically does not have the deeper resonance that non-aborigional people prefer. They both have their respectable qualities,it just depends on the nature of the player's style, traditional,or modern/funky! To me,they are both wonderful!!
